Mother's Day

Mother’s Day!

Is there any new explanation one can give for Mother’s Day. We all know why we celebrate Mother’s Day. I have always wondered why we need to have specific dates to celebrate something – Mother’s Day/father’s day/valentine’s day etc etc. Nowadays it seems like every other day is some day – Roses day/ Siblings Day/Twins day and what not. Now it has become more of a show than anything else, but still all these days started existing due to a specific reason.

So “Google” came for help again, when I started looking at Mother’s day origin and celebrations. As usual this wiki page gave very interesting details on how today is not celebrated as Mothers day across the world as we all think. Every county has chosen a date. In India, its celebrated today and I really liked the explanation given “Indians do not celebrate the occasion as a religious event; its celebration is mostly restricted to urban areas where the occasion has been largely commercialized”.

Today is the day, you will see so many pics/posts of everyone posting of them and their mother, mother in law and kids(if they are married and have kids). It’s a good gesture which I am not going to question.

Today morning, after a lot of thinking, I also ended up posting my mother’s pic in whatsapp status(that’s the “In” thing now right?). But as I was posting, I was getting mixed feelings for many things, and none of them were related to my mom.

We acknowledge and credit Mother’s for their sacrifice, selfless work, support she has given us forever and been there for us always. She is the 1st one we call, when we need any advice or anything, be it health related, cooking, kids etc. Do you remember the “Queen” movie, where kangana ranaut calls her mom(in India its night when she is sleeping) to just ask about that 1 small ingredient. Now her mom in the movie, not knowing wakes up her friends to find the answer and the tells her.

And this is what I want to write in my mixed feeling.

If I am an independent and strong woman, who can manage things on her own and have specific personality, its because of my parents and definitely the large chunk goes to my mom who played the biggest role in this.

Her strictness, discipline combined with subtle scolding, guidance and ensuring I always have an open mind for things have shaped me to who I am.

But at the same time, there were instances when there were other women who chipped in and guided and helped me, when I was far away from my home. These women, who were not my own mother but then a relative, a friend and sometime a stranger.

Each woman who goes out of the way to help others, irrespective of the relationship leaves that impression. For me, I had countless such women starting from my aunt, who was my hostel guardian, where I spent countless weekends during my college life. Her home became my safe haven without even my knowing. She was the 1st one who introduced me to beauty parlors. She was as chilled out as my parents and encouraged me to go out, watch movies etc. They showed by action that I was becoming an adult and should make my decisions.

Then there were other aunts who have spoken to me so much, taught me so much in their own style.
1 aunt(actually my aunt’s mom) was also a guardian and showered me with love and her guidance.
My grandmother and her sister, so many other relatives – the count is countless! And this count doesn’t restrict to only blood relatives.

In India, we start calling family friend aunt's with specific relationship names which makes them wither dad’s sister or mom’s sister in gesture. So many Perima’s and Chitti’s in my life and each at certain time, have gone that extra mile to cook for me or show me something new.
Post marriage, apart from my mother-in-law(who is so similar to my mom in her views etc), MIL’s sisters, couple of aunts(grandmother age) have also treated me like their own daughter, visiting me, cooking for me, asking me tech questions like how my mom would ask, and even scolding me in their own rights – as their own daughter.

My SIL(elder brother’s wife) has also at times given me guidance, taught me things like how a mother would do.

To each woman, irrespective of relationship, their guidance/generosity/empathy is what makes this day special. To all of them(not just mother's as such) – Thank you for being you!

Beautifully written Sound. I actually have not done a mother's day post in a long long time. It doesnt mean I don't appreciate her. And yes, there are so many other women who too had made a huge influence on our lives. Love this uplifting post.
